Women in Wine, Italy, Le Donne Del Vino

It used to be that the most famous wine makers were 70 year old men. That’s changed; the torch has been passed to younger generations and to women. It is an international movement and I find the swelling ranks of women who make wine, own vineyards, or are in other influential positions in Italy very exciting. You see Italian women make very good wine, and only very good wine. In fact, women all over the world are creating amazing wines; wines which are true to nature and to their place- wines worth seeking out. So when Matthew asked what I…

Profile: Terra Blanca Winery Location: Washington State AVA: Red Mountain Owners: Keith and ReNae Pilgrim Winemaker: Keith Pilgrim Vineyards: Estate, Red Mountain Varietals Grown: 45+ Annual Production: Approximately 35,000 cases Wine Club: Yes ——————————————————– When I first moved to the Columbia Valley, I paid no attention to the lump of sagebrush, tumbleweeds, and cheatgrass known as Red Mountain. However, it was shocking to learn that people were trying to grow grapes on Red Mountain. What kinds of people do something like that? Washington wine pioneers have taken risks, invested their life savings, and worked very hard to realize their dreams;…

The Sinfully Delicious 7 Deadly Zins

Mischievous berry flavors blend with disobedient spicy notes and seductively naughty ruby hues to create the ultimate in evil pleasure, 7 Deadly Zins. This recalcitrant red is a sinfully tasty collaboration of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Petite Verdot artfully conjured by Michael David Winery, named after its two founding brothers. But, this is not their only succulent offering, there are seventeen to be exact and they even have a few more surprises in the works!  I visited Michael David Winery this past fall in my regular hunt for wineries in Northern California.  The tasting room in Lodi, California is…

Holiday Pork Roast with Red Wine and Currant Jelly Sauce

Dec 14, 2012

There’s nothing like gathering around the table with family and friends during the holidays.  This is the time of year where an impressive dish elicits “ooh’s” and “ahh’s” when presented to the table.  I love to make a beautiful pork roast and then give it an extra bit of flair with a mouth-watering sauce to pass. This “Currant Jelly Sauce” is one of my absolute favorites.  I usually make it with a dash of dry sherry, but if you are serving a red wine with dinner (like this Chianti Classico from Castello di Albola) then why not use that in…

Red Wine Risotto

Nov 28, 2012

Buongiorno, Dine’d Up readers!  I am so excited to contribute to the edible portion of this fantastic site.  Since I am sure many of you are wine connoisseurs, I thought I would start with a recipe that not only pairs well with wine, it is made with it, too!  On a recent trip to Sicily at the Principi di Butera estate, I enjoyed a breathtaking risotto dish made with their red wine.  It was prepared with a beautiful Nero d’Avola, a native grape to the island. When I came back to the states I found myself craving this decadent dish…

Baked Beef Brisket Recipe

Oven Baked Beef Brisket Recipe

Nov 22, 2012

The smell of roasting brisket reminds me of Sunday dinners spent with my Grandma Ruth. She was an exceptional cook, bringing her own unique flair to the traditional “comfort” food dishes, including roasts, ham, pies and cookies. Her potatoes couldn’t be beat; being from Idaho she knew every way possible to make the lowly potato shine! We recommend pairing this beautiful beef brisket with homemade mashed potatoes and gravy, served up with a glass of Castello D’Albola Chianti Classico ($12 at Costco). Brisket essentially comes in two cuts; the point and the flat cut. The flat cut tends to be…

Fabulous French Onion Soup

Nov 18, 2012

With winter rolling in, this is the perfect soup for those cold days no matter where you live. Create this comforting French Onion Soup by picking the best local yellow onions you can find. Splurge on quality Gruyere cheese from either Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s. With a Swiss husband, cheese in our family is sacred; as it should be in every home. Serves: 8 – 10 People Ingredients: 3 Lbs yellow onions (mandoline cut or thinly sliced) 3 Tbsp butter (I use ½ no salt butter and ½ vegan butter) 1 Tbsp oil (Canola) 1/4 Cup brown sugar 1/4…

Pork Filet Wellington

Nov 18, 2012

Perfected by my husband Marc’s mom, Madeleine, this Pork Filet Wellington has been a standard in our home for years.  It’s a family favorite that pairs well with mushroom risotto and King Estate Signature Pinot Gris. I recommend always taking the time to find the perfect cut of pork filet. Don’t be afraid to ask the butcher if the pre-cut options are too fatty or don’t look fresh. I can’t ever remember a time when I asked the butcher to cut me a fresh piece that they weren’t more than happy to do so. Ingredients: 2 Lbs Pork Filet 1…
